Minutes of meeting held April 9th 2005

1. Attendance - 23 members at Lancing Parish Hall

2. Apologies for Abscence - A Gunn, B Reynolds, Mrs M Goode, R Haines, Mr Mrs Goacher, J Grey, Celia Behan

3. Minutes of last meeting - Committee Meeting at 19 The Crescent, Lancing - 7th March at 7.30. Appoved Marian Convey

4. Chair for this Meeting - Jay Cooper

5. Secretary's Report for 2004 - Summary 2004-5 minutes, copies available for anyone who would like them.

6. Treasurers report for 2004 - The year ended with a balance of £920.70. Copies of report available on request.

7. Election of new Committee
See separate sheet for Committee names.
7a Please note that £2 subs will be due for all members who joined in 2004. This will be used for printing and postage.

8. Diffusion Tubes Explanation - A minimum of two tubes need to be co-located at each site due to the inherent variation in the results, at least two sites need to be chosen, one at the location of interest and the other at the perimeter of the airfield for comparison. Ideally a number of sites around the perimeter of the airfield would be used to get a better picture of the pollution across the site. Tubes can be exposed for any period required but to get an idea of annual average concentrations, 12 sites of tubes are best exposed for one month, each over a 12 month period which will give an indication of average levels in our area. The tubes will give a combined reading of air and travel pollution.
*See Note - Apologies if I did not make this plain at meeting, we are monitoring nitrogen dioxide in the air.

A discussion was held on the cost of diffusion tubes and placement of £797 approximately, for the Adur residential areas surrounding the airport.

1. A member thought that a report from Cassela Sanger, the suppliers of the tubes, might not be accepted by the Council as evidence of pollution in the Adur Area.
2. A member thought that now was a good time to start a project to monitor, as the Air Quality Regulations had already been breached in some areas in Southwick, Shoreham and Lancing.
3. Two members were happy to have the tubes at their own homes.
4. Secretary said that other members had volunteered for the project.

After much discussion it was agreed to vote on:-

Should we spend £797 on a project to monitor air pollution in this area for the next 12 months, which would need at each site placement of two tubes, and would have to be co-ordinated by one person to collect and return the tubes at specified times.

Abstained 7
As the meeting attendance was low, and considering we now have over 360 members it was agreed to send out voting papers and explanations for members to vote, see note above, voting paper enc.

9. Film. Terry Chapman had produced a film and had put it on his Lap Top at the end of the room for all to see and the meeting stopped for Tea for people to look at it.
The meeting discussed marketing the film, it was suggested that we might take it to the Library, but when asked to put up our poster the Library Manager said "They cannot be seen to support any individual campaign" and could not display them, so we may not be able to do this.

Another idea was to introduce it to Schools, or Church Groups, contact us if you can help.

A member suggested that we should put the film on our website. It was highlighted that not all had access to a computer, but Computer access could be used at the Library to see it, on paying an annual fee of £12. But I have not been able to get it on screen.

Terry suggested that we put the film on CD Rom or DVD as it would be a cheaper option, he would look into it. Cost of DVD disks was approximately £15 for fifty copies.

Secretary suggested that we should send it to TV Companies but wanted to know when a marketable film would be available.

Terry said "that the film needed to be changed as the aircraft featured was not correct, and John Lovelock has agreed to research the correct Aircraft, and let him know where to find the correct one.

John has since said that the aircraft similar to the ones that will be used at Shoreham, can be found at "London Airport".

10. ARCHAEOLOGY Secretary had obtained some documentation showing the position of the Salterns at Lancing.

Chair asked if the group wanted to make the Archaeology a selling point in our campaign, to keep the Airport as it is, and to promote a Archaeology/Wildlife Centre. A member said "No because it would cause extra traffic". Secretary said "People could arrive by push bikes", this caused much hilarity.

A member said that, for wildlife, only a few hours had been dedicated to researching the area but a survey of the beetle population had been done, *Secretary had the Documents up for all to read, copies can be requested, and that we may also access further information by contacting Woods Mill.

There was also at the present time a development to raise the land to make a Gold course to the north of the Airfield, planning permission given two years ago, which had already resulted in some Saltern mounds being lost, as far as we know New Monks Farm Corporation own this development, anybody know different!

A member thought that we should raise the campaign to a higher level to incorporate the interest in Wild life and Archaeology and bring it more to the publics knowledge, as we have not touched this area of comment at the present.

As this Area is a Significant area of Scientific Interest for the people of Adur Valley, publicity should be stepped up. It was thought that we should be lobbying Councillors on this issue.
*Secretar'ys Note, Please contact if you wish to do this.

11. Report back from Worthing Council meeting
The question put to council and answer given by Worthing Council read out by Secretary
Copies available on request

12. New Campaing Letter Members discussed format of letter for mail drop. It was agreed to set a banner headline style A4 copy directed at: 1st Worthing, 2nd Lancing, 3rd Shoreham.
Secretaries note, this is nearly at completion and it is hoped it will be ready to put through doors in May

13. Any other Business Secretary read letter from Archaeology Sussex past who referred us back to West Sussex Council Archaeology department.

Celia Behan has given us a four part A4 smaller edition of our logo. It is hoped that badges or car stickers could be produced. Anyone with information on how to get this done contact the Secretary.

Raffle was called.

*Extra news - A plot of 1 acre at the north end of the Airport recently sold for £31,500 and Monks Farm is up for sale.
